Dr Giles P Croft Giles qualified in 1998, having undertaken an intercalated degree in Psychology. After attaining surgical membership in 2001 he took a four month sabbatical during which he cycled 4300 miles to Turkey and back, returning to a Senior SHO post in Orthopaedics with an acute and personal understanding of knee pain. In 2003, disenchanted with hospital medicine and the impact of the EWTD on surgical training, he left clinical practice to work full time for the Health Informatics Unit at the Royal College of Physicians.
Giles now has a portfolio career: he is a freelance cycle photo-journalist, medical advisor for a cycling magazine, qualified cycle coach, health informatics consultant and motivational speaker. Derek Ayling is a management of change specialist and trainer with a proven track record in both small and large organisations in the public and private sectors. He holds an MBA from Cass Business School and a Diploma in Marketing.
Dr Michael Uprichard Dr Uprichard has been in General Practice both here and abroad, in one or other form for the past 30 years. Seven of these have been as a locum GP which choice he has made he says as “It gives me freedom of choice in where and when I work in my practice of medicine”. Outside of clinical work he has organised local educational groups as well as being LMC Secretary in Gloucestershire; he has also been involved commercially in medical recruitment. For the past five years he has served on the Council of the NASGP, first as Treasurer then as Chairman and is currently a GP Appraiser.
Alison Rushworth is a personal development specialist and trainer with a wealth of experience, and a proven track record in both small and large organisations. She is an expert in communication skills (verbal and written), training techniques, presentation skills, with an ability to help people to solve problems. Her style is interactive, believing that people learn best by being able to apply theories to their own situations. She is a certified practitioner of NLP.
Andrea Gray Andrea Gray has worked in the Financial Services Arena for the last 25 years. She started in Retail Banking and then 10 years ago, moved to BMA Services and specialised in advising members of the BMA before progressing to a Management position. Andrea is now the Director for BMA Services being responsible for the whole of the UK. The role at BMA Services leads to frequently speaking to groups of Medics on a variety of subjects such as Retirement Planning, Investment Strategy’s, Inheritance Tax and Pensions. Andrea is responsible for the 40 Independent Financial Advisers the BMA have across the UK.
Stephen Jones Stephen is a recognised and accredited specialist in Pharmaceutical Medicine and has a track record in clinical development and product registrations. Stephen qualified as a doctor from London University in 1994 and as a surgeon in 1999. Since joining the pharmaceutical industry 8 years ago Stephen has held senior positions in various companies including Elan Pharmaceuticals, where he was Medical Director and Head of Clinical Development. Stephen now consults to the pharmaceutical industry and is Managing Director of Synapse Medical Resourcing Ltd, which he established in 2004.
Dr Chris Rufford Dr Chris Rufford works as a consultant in sports and exercise medicine at St Bartholomew and the royal London school of medicine. Chris worked as a GP anesthetist in New Zealand before returning to his medical school in London to do a Sports and Exercise Medicine course. He undertook specialist registrar training in Accident and Emergency Medicine before moving into medical education and working as a Sports Physician. Chris now runs sport clinics at two teaching hospitals supervising specialist registrars, contributes to the running of the MSc and BSc courses and special study modules, he teaches on the 5yr and graduate entry MBBS programmes clinical and communication skills and MBBS university of London examiner. He also enjoys teaching both undergraduates and postgraduates in general practice. Chris is one of the core medical team for the London Marathon and Triathlon and medical officer for a Porsche Racing team. Chris still plays water polo, is a keen sailor, plays tennis and runs when he can. He has been on a number of expeditions and keen to do more. Each year he tries to participate in a new sport, last year it was sky diving, this year it is archery!
Debbie Smith is one of only a few highly experienced and qualified personal brand specialists in the UK. Debbie is an accomplished impression management specialist and has recently shown her skills and knowledge working alongside organisations within the health service, retail, finance and commercial sectors. Having joined Zenon Consulting as business development director in 2008, Debbie promotes business development through people, brand and perception. She has a high success rate in helping senior managers achieve promotion through brand training. Personal branding is not about the clothes and colors you wear. It is about how people percieve you from what they see and hea. It is about what you stand for, where you want to go and how you go about getting there’, says Debbie.
Professor Derek Gallen – UK Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO) Professor Derek Gallen is the postgraduate dean for Wales as well as acting as national director for the UKFPO since January 2007. He joined MMC as Foundation lead for the Programme in 2004. Derek’s main interest is in medical education and he has written extensively on educational needs assessment, medical management and higher professional education. His specific interests lie in reversing the decline in academic clinical placements by the introduction of academic placements into the Foundation Programme. Derek previously worked as a General Practitioner in Northamptonshire and GP Director in the Oxford Deanery.
Dr Umesh Prabhu FRCPCH Umesh is a Consultant Paediatrician in Bury, which is a small town, situated 10 miles north of Manchester and is a part of the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Umesh was trained in India and came to UK in 1982 and obtained further training in Bury, Edinburgh, Oxford and Leeds and in 1992 was appointed as consultant Paediatrician. Umesh was Clinical Director of Paediatrics (1992 -1993), Medical Director of Bury NHS Trust (1998-2003), Board Member for the National Patient Safety Agency (2001-2003). In 2003 Umesh was appointed as the National Clinical Assessment Service adviser as well as Clinical Adviser to the Health Care Commission. Umesh is also a Trustee of Action against Medical Accidents, Vice-Chairman of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) and Executive Member of the British International Doctors Association. Umesh has been an Overseas doctors mentor for the last 15 years and is a co-founder of Yahoo based discussion group called Indi_go which has nearly 5000 Overseas doctors as members and there are active discussions taking place in various topics which are relevant to the International Medical Graduates. Umesh has keen interest in Patient Safety, Medical Errors, professional performance management, Clinical risk management, appraisal and revalidation and Equality and Diversity. He is an active member of many Equality and Diversity Committees at various Institutions like DOH, Pennine Acute Hospital Trust and BMA.
Dr Graham Easton Graham is a GP in west London, clinical teaching fellow at Imperial College School of Medicine, and a medical journalist. He is an experienced presenter: on national radio, to medical conferences and courses, to board meetings, and of course on ward rounds. He has been a senior producer and presenter for BBC Radio Science for more than 10 years, where he has presented a range of programmes from Radio 4's Case Notes and Pick of The Week to Science in Action and Health Matters on the World Service. He also spent four years as an editor at the BMJ (British Medical Journal). Graham's medical training was at The Royal London Hospital and on the Oxford Region training scheme for general practice. He has a masters degree with distinction in Science Communication from Imperial College, London.
Judith Mohring Judith is a final year Maudsley SpR in psychiatry and director of Claritus, a specialist coaching service for doctors. Claritus delivers high quality individual and group coaching for health professionals with an emphasis on career, personal and professional development. Judith set up Claritus in 2008 in response to the difficulties faced by many colleagues in the profession, and a belief that it is still possible to have a great carer as a doctor. Her own career highlights have included working as a consultant psychiatrist in Australia, designing a new therapy service for Holloway prison and spending 6 months as a management consultant in the private sector.
Kathleen Sullivan is a professional coach. Her On-Call Coaching offers priority booking for doctors. She is a director of London Coaching Associates and founder of London’s Walkie-Talkie Coaching, offering ‘professional coaching on-the-trot’. Previously she worked at Imperial College School of Medicine on the HIV/AIDS Knowledge for Action Programme for Russia. She developed a health promotion project for improving access to clinical services for Russian sex workers. Her ThinKSpace Action Learning Programme, recently implemented at a London PCT, helps teams work more effectively. Currently, she is developing a co-mentoring programme, Consultant to the power of two, with the KSS Deanery for newly-qualified Consultants. Kathleen has an MA in Education and International Development: Health Promotion (University of London), Diplomas in Coaching and Nutrition and is a licensed NLP Practitioner.
Laura Brammar Laura is a Careers Adviser based at C2 Careers Consultancy, University of London. With a background in Education, she has an MSc Organisational Psychology from Birkbeck College. Working on behalf of the BMA Careers Service, Laura provides 1:1 confidential career counselling to doctors at any stage of their career. Additionally, Laura also delivers tailor-made practice interview services as well as group workshops on presenting and influencing skills, for example. Laura also works closely with UCL Medical School where she provides 1:1 career counselling and workshops throughout the MBBS programme. Most recently Laura has written articles for the BMJ ranging from CV writing to networking skills.
Mark Wilson Mark Wilson has worked extensively overseas, in India with Tibetan Refugees, in Nepal, in Australia as a G.P., in South Africa and as a researcher for NASA. In addition he has been an Expedition Doctor both in the Arctic and Himalayas. He runs the website www.medicstravel.org and In 2000 wrote "The Medic's Guide to Work and Electives Around the World" (now in its second edition), both of which are designed to help doctors and medical students plan work or an elective overseas. Currently he works as a Neurosurgical and a Pre-Hospital Care Registrar in London having just returned from Everest where he lead the Neurosciences Research of the UCL Xtreme Everest Project. His talk will give ideas and information on planning work or an elective overseas.
Nandkishore Potdar bio Currently Locum Consultant at Grantham Hospital since 2005, Main areas of Specialisation Laparoscopic Surgery, Breast Surgery.On GMC Specialist Register as General Surgeon .Has been a Speaker on various NHS related topics for various Universities such as Keele University, active member of Bapio( British Assc of Physicians of Indian Origin).
Richard Fieldhouse has worked as a Freelance GP in West Sussex for 12 years. Soon after qualifying as a GP, he joined the rising tide of growing opinion that GP locums should no longer be treated as second class GPs and instead be recognised as equals among our profession. After founding the National Association of Sessional GP’s with some equally minded colleagues in 1997, he has since gone on to develop and enhance the NASGP's own Freelance GP Team concept in the guise of Pallant Medical Chambers - a growing organisation overseeing small teams of GP locums working in a managed environment. He hopes this will become the gold standard way for GP locums to work in the future.
Anthony Easton Tony is Managing Director of Easton West Ltd which specialises in helping company directors strengthen their leadership, presentational, and interpersonal skills. His background is as marketing specialist and board director. After 20 years within the financial services sector, culminating in board level appointments at Nat West stockbrokers and Societe Generale, he retrained extensively as a specialist executive coach. Since 2002, he has worked with leadership teams and directors across a range of sectors and companies, including Marks and Spencer, Reuters, Parkview academy, United Biscuits, Henkel, Cambridge University Press and The Business Design Centre.
Constance Lamb Constance is a professional actress and public speaking consultant with vast experience in this specialist field. She has worked in theatre, TV and voice-over medium. She is a trained teacher and has an M.A. and taught voice to graduates at Florida State University. Over the last 15 years she has coached and trained CEOs, VPs, MDs and senior management teams from international businesses and also the NHS achieving remarkable results. Her specialism is dynamic presentation skills and interview technique.
Steve Preston Steve is a highly professional and experienced career coach, trainer and facilitator. He has worked in sales, operations and human resources positions throughout his career and achieved great success in consistently developing managers, teams and individuals to maximise their potential and deliver excellent performance. His training and development work within SMP Solutions has helped many people and teams become more effective. He has also helped hundreds of men and women across sectors both in employment and self-employment become fulfilled and move into jobs and careers they really love.
David Sowden Senior Responsible Owner, Modernising Medical Careers (MMC), Department of Health David leads the MMC programme for England, advising on postgraduate medical education with respect to both educational practice and principles and operational issues at the level of deaneries, specialty training programmes and trusts. He is joint chair of the MMC England Programme Board and a member of the MMC UK Co-ordinating Group. David has been Postgraduate Dean in Nottingham since 2000 and was appointed Dean Director of the East Midlands Healthcare Workforce Deanery in April 2007. Previously, David was a GP principal for 17 years in a practice in North West Leicestershire and Director of Post Graduate GP Education in Leicester for 5 years.
